One major concern of many divers is the fate of the world’s coral ecosystems, which are dying off in many regions due to mass bleaching and accelerating climate change. In September 2016, the Nature Conservancy and Mote Marine Laboratory announced they would be partnering on a major conservation effort spanning the Florida Keys and Caribbean.

The initiative will last 15 years and involve coordinated efforts to restore the 1 million corals across the region. Coral gene banks that encompass the full range of genetic diversity will be collected. These banks may help in growing coral varieties most resistant to climate change. In the next year, some 50,000 coral fragments will be grown in preparation for the initiative’s official launch.
