Michael Schamis, former business development officer and analyst for MarketCounsel, holds an MBA in sports and entertainment management from Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business. In addition to his marketing and sales work, Michael Schamis is a longtime member and instructor with the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI).
Having granted over 24 million certifications to over 136,000 individuals around the world, PADI maintains several scuba diving courses, including its Instructor Development Course (IDC). Designed for individuals who are passionate about scuba diving and want to share their love with overs, the PADI IDC lets students earn the rating of PADI Instructor. The course is split into two parts: The Assistant Instructor (AI) course and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. After completing the entire IDC, professionals attend an Instructor Examination (IE). If they pass the exam, they earn their certification as a PADI Instructor.
The PADI IDC takes place over the course of either five or seven days, and teaches students about everything from diver safety to the business of diving and PADI standards. Although the course does offer some online learning, in-person classroom time is still needed for students to practice the skills they are learning. Any dive professionals who already hold an instructor rating with a different organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the PADI OWSI program. PADI Divemasters must have been certified for at least six months to enroll in the IDC. They must also have 100 dives and 60 logged dives, a signed medical statement, and recent emergency training.
