In addition to following the professional sports teams from his hometown of Chicago, Michael Schamis enjoys scuba diving in his spare time and maintains a membership with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

PADI has provided more than 24 million people with scuba diving certification worldwide. This accomplishment correlates with its educational programming that includes an eLearning platform. Among the courses available online is the PADI Open Water Diver course.

The PADI Open Water Diver class allows students to complete the knowledge development section through an online portal at their own convenience. The interactive program consists of a course manual and video instruction, which cover diving principles, facts, and concepts. To ensure all students thoroughly understand the curriculum, the course includes short quizzes to test comprehension. Completion of the online component, along with in-person open water dives that can take as little as three days to finish, results in PADI certification.
